The National Science Foundation (NSF) is planning to commit $9 million during this fiscal year to a program that will enable more undergraduate students to have “hands‐on” research experience. NSF is now seeking proposals for its new “Research Experiences for Undergraduates” (REU) program. “One of the National Science Foundation's principal goals is to ensure an adequate supply of high‐quality mathematicians, scientists, and engineers for the future . . . . There is widespread agreement that hands‐on experience in active research is one of the most effective techniques for training undergraduates for [such careers], and that too few such experiences are now available,” an NSF announcement said.
