The Metropolitan St. Louis Branch of AGU met on March 3, 1971, to hear Charles A. Whitten, Chief Geodesist, Office of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, National Ocean Survey, NOAA, Department of Commerce, and General Secretary of the AGU, speak on the ‘Crustal Movement Monitored by Geodetic Techniques.’ Whitten challenged the 85 members and guests to search for a means of using the tremendous amount of energy released from the earthquake as man has made use of other natural sources of energy such as wind and water. Carl Kisslinger, Chairman of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences of St. Louis University and President of the Section of Seismology, who is working with NAS on the engineering and geological aspects of earthquakes, spoke briefly concerning his views on the recent California earthquake. |
