The first U.S. Geological Survey stream‐gaging station was set up on the Rio Grande at Embudo, N. Mex., in 1889. The site was chosen for its easy accessibility by railroad, a necessity for bringing in scientific and camp equipment, and because funds appropriated by Congress for the Irrigation Survey were to be used only west of the 100th meridian. Chief hydrologist of the USGS, Philip Cohen, spoke September 20 at the Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C., commemorating the 100th anniversary of the station.
