A definite and accelerating move towards certification and registration seems to be taking place among the hydrologic, water resources, environmental, and related disciplines. Just a few examples about recent actions in this direction may be in order. In April 1989, the Association of State Boards of Geology was formed. Representatives from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia met to discuss the issues of reciprocity and written examinations. In New Hampshire the state legislature recommended the Board of Natural Scientists be restructured to handle licensing or certification of geologists as well as soil scientists.
