The advantage of null methods of measurement is generally appreciated by physicists. Another device of great service in certain classes of electric measurements is the guard‐ring. These two devices were embodied in an arrangement designed by the senior author for the purpose of eliminating errors which are likely to arise in certain types of atmospheric‐electric measurements from inadequate insulation. These errors are difficult to detect unless they amount to 20 per cent or perhaps considerably more.
