The stickiness of cotton is often attributed to the excess amount of reducing sugars, which cause processing problems and loss in efficiency of production. An investigation is reported in which near-infra-red (NIR) diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy was used to determine the amount of reducing sugars present in cotton. A four-wavelength regression model was developed by correlating absorbance values at these wavelengths to the percentage sugar content as measured by Perkins's method. NIR spectra of various sugars are discussed.
