This essay reconsiders the question, “Is human thought logical?” Some structural features of human cognition are described, focusing chiefly on the distinction between consciousness and unconsciousness. The syllogism research which supports the conclusion that human thought is not particularly logical is considered and set aside for several reasons. Research describing general unconscious cognitive operations, as well as perception, comprehension, and inference in particular, is shown to support the idea that human cognition can be modeled logically. Creativity and imagery are acknowledged as exceptions to the overall conclusion that human thought is logical. This logicality particularly typifies our unconscious processes, which are foundational to human communication.
