AbstractThe article describes the literacy behaviors of three low‐SES learners who were designated, through several criteria, as inexperienced with print at the onset of school. The children and their teachers were tracked using ethnographic techniques of data collection, including field observations, tape‐recordings, and interviews. Patterns of the children's behavior and hypotheses about written language were viewed in light of their responses to the instructional environment. The children failed to meet the intent of the curriculum through mid‐first grade and learned dysfunctional strategies for getting along in school. Some individual help and high expectations on the part of two of the teachers offered hope that two of the children may succeed in school and literacy learning.
