dc.description ‘Women in TEFL’ held their first conference in 1986. Since then various women's groups have been formed in Britain and abroad, and a newsletter has been established. The aims of Women in TEFL include giving women in EFL more confidence; improving the status of women teachers of EFL and making sure that they get equal opportunities for promotion; and improving the portrayal of women in language-teaching materials.1To assist in the last, guidelines for avoiding sexism in materials are being produced, for use by writers and editors, and a questionnaire is being circulated to find out in what ways teachers are affected by sexism in materials. In the following article an author and an editor, both concerned about avoiding sexism in EFL materials, analyse problems and solutions from their respective experiences. First Catherine Walter explores aspects of writing materials for publication, with emphasis on combating unconscious sexism. Then Jill Florent details areas of language, content, and culture that pose problems for editors, making special note of possible conflicts between ideology and pedagogy.
