Angola has recently enacted a new framework Data Protection Act, aimed at regulating data processing generally in Angola. While mostly based on the EU Data Protection Directive, this Act is distinctly tailored to meet the specific contemporary challenges of Angola, which is currently developing at a fast pace. The Act classifies data processing operations based on the type of data processed and the purposes to which data are to be put, setting out specific rules for each category of operations. While the regulatory body for data protection has not yet been created, the Act is already in force and enforcement proceedings for the duties and obligations it sets forth may be instituted by anyone.Heavy fines and other sanctions give the Act the teeth to match its ambitious scope.
