The use of antibiotics as feed-additives, even at very low concentrations, results in the emergence of resistant bacteria in the gut flora of animals. It is possible, and in some instances proven, that resistant strains pass from animal to man. But it is also probable that many resistant bacteria colonising man have no animal origin. Thus we must not expect too much from the total prohibition of antibiotics in animal feeds. |
