The reconstruction of this sculpture gallery, which consisted mainly of ancient Roman works, evokes the cultural milieu surrounding antiquities in late seventeenth-century Rome. Detailed inventory descriptions reveal aesthetic concepts of the display and convey a sense of its colourful splendour. A ‘tour’ through the gallery rooms introduces the better-known pieces, almost all of which are presened in the Museo del Prado. Contemporary sculptors employed as restorers added to the baroque flavour of the presentation and took inspiration from it for their own work. The gallery itself contributed to the aspirations of its owner, Livio Odescalchi, nephew of Pope Innocent XI, who cleverly emphasized his collection's provenance - it came from the greatly admired Queen Christina of Sweden – to enhance his own position in Roman society and claim royal status.
