A graduate in Modern and Mediaeval languages from Cambridge, Elizabeth Irvine began her professional career as a teacher. After training in the social sciences at the London School of Economics, she became a psychiatric social worker, mainly in child guidance, working for 14 years at the Tavistock Clinic. In 1966 she was appointed Reader in Social Work at the University of York, where she launched the first British Master's Course in Social Work. She left York in 1973 and subsequently was appointed as a consultant to the team at the Open University which designed the course on Social Work, Community Work and Society. Her collected papers have been published by Pergamon Press under the title Social Work and Human Problems. (1)
