Based on an integrated reading of the social and sacramental dimensions of 1 Cor 11.17–34, this study suggests that, rather than denoting the private homes of the wealthy, Paulʼs use of οικια/οικος (11.22, 34) refers to the domain of the Corinthian churchʼs gathering. As a result, his exhortation in these verses entails not a tacit endorsement of stratified resources but a concerted argument for the feeding of the hungry in the communityʼs shared meal (δϵιπνον), a meal he hopes will imitate Jesusʼ pattern of self-sacrifice and so will become a meal that is ‘of the Lord (κυριακον δϵιπνον)’. |

‘If Anyone Hungers …’: An Integrated Reading of 1 Cor 11.17–34This article is an expanded version of my paper given in the Pauline Epistles section of the annual SBL meeting in Denver, Colorado, in November 2001. My deep thanks to Richard Hays, Joel Marcus, and Rick Stone for their careful reading and critical responses. While any merits of my exegesis reflect their influence, the flaws herein are mine alone. |
