Holographic projection of speckle patterns applied to remote metrology

The holographic projection of speckle patterns is demonstrated to be useful for remote measurements of the displacements of rigid objects. The hologram of a fine diffuser acts as the element that projects the pattern under laser light illumination just on to the area of detection. As a consequence, there is no loss of luminous energy associated with the dimensions of the projecting element, as is the case when the speckle pattern is obtained directly from a plane diffuser. The different focal properties of the hologram due to nonlinearities of the emulsion response permit its use in transmission or reflection as a multiple element.
