The procedure of McCavert and Rudge (1970) is extended to the case of proton-helium collisions and applied to the problem of calculating excitation cross sections from the ground state to the 2¹P, 3¹P, 4¹P and 5¹P states. It is found that the method gives cross section results which are substantially in agreement with experimental data over a wide energy range. Polarization fractions are also calculated and, in common with other theoretical treatments, are found to disagree with experimental values.
