Methyl tunnelling and torsion in acetates: the shape of hindering potentials

Methyl tunnel splittings and torsion frequencies have been measured by inelastic neutron scattering for seven acetates. The parameters of the hindering potential V<sub>3</sub> cos 3 phi +V<sub>6</sub> cos 6 phi where phi is the methyl rotation angle, were determined from the spectra. The ratio V<sub>6</sub>/V<sub>3</sub> is similar (about 0.15) for six of the samples though sodium acetate appears anomalous. The dependence of this ratio on the form of interatomic potentials is discussed.
