A cryostat is described which has been used for sample temperature control in a pulsed n.m.r. spectrometer in the range 78°K to room temperature. The temperature controller may be preset to the sample temperature required and the sample subsequently maintained at this temperature to better than 0·5 degK for long periods of time. The advantages of this method of temperature control over the more conventional gas-flow and controlled heat-leak methods are discussed.
