The assumptions of the shock-expansion method are re-examined. Although the shock-expansion method and Whithamʼs rule are used to treat two different classes of problems, certain similarities between these two methods are noted. It is suggested that a single procedure leads to solutions for the entire flow field for both classes of problems.
