We present a general theory for any cellular instability problem where the initial symmetries can be broken. We establish that the post-bifurcation behaviour is always governed by amplitude equations of the Ginzburg-Landau type. Moreover, the coefficients of these equations are obtained in closed form which allows their analytical or numerical computation. Distributed and localized perturbations are accounted
