This study investigated children's interpretation of the subject of process nominals (PNs) in complement position of a sentence. Its purpose was to see whether children base their interpretation of the PN subject on: (a) their familiarity with m n-V meaning, (b) the plausibility of the sentential subject as the performer of the act specified in the PN, or (c) use of their knowledge of PN argument structure as positive evidence. Participants ranged in age from 4; 1 to 6;8. The pattern of judgments was consistent with predictions made for (c); it indicated that they distinguish between unambiguous unergative and transitive PNs, using the former as evidence that the main V is not a [ + control] V with respect to PN complements. No familiar-V or plausibility effect was found. A sequence of hypotheses children use to determine the control status of Vs with respect to PN complements is suggested and seen to be compatible with a claim that grammatical knowledge is instantaneous. |
