ABSTRACTAn experimental system was constructed and used to obtain data necessary for the evaluation and improvement of a mathematical model for a crossflow coal gasification system. These experimental data were consistent with those of similar gasification processes. The evaluation of the mathematical model indicated the proper trends in the crossflow gasification process; however, the predictions from the model and the data were not at the desired level of agreement. Employing a sensitivity analysis, appropriate correction factors to the heat transfer and chemical kinetics correlations were determined. The addition of these correction factors was necessary to account for the variation in the reactivity of the feedstock. These correction factors were found to produce heat transfer and chemical kinetics expressions which are within the scatter of currently accepted experimental data for these quantities. It was concluded that for the model presented, these experimental correction factors must he evaluated for each feedstock before an accurate mathematical description may be performed. |
