AbstractEating disorders are in part created and maintained by the interrelated phenomena of male-female relationships and women's struggle for political rights and personal respect. This article explores weight and shape concerns as: 1) a backlash; 2) a troublesome but integral part of the definition of the success for the “modern woman”; and 3) an expression of “father hunger.” These issues indicate that, in order to help prevent eating disorders, men must take responsibility for changing themselves and other men. Numerous suggestions are offered for facilitating this process.
