| dc.description | AbstractBinge eating is viewed as uncontrolled addictive behavior, as opposed to purging or vomiting, which are considered to result from “rational” reasoning. Therefore, the commitment to refrain from purging or vomiting can be part of the treatment contract. Based on these notions, a 10-session treatment procedure was developed, comprising self-management elements that help the patients interrupt the conditioned chain of binge-triggering cues and binge episodes. The case of a bulimia nervosa patient who has been treated according to this model is described in detail. Total abstinence was reached in a relatively short time, accompanied by a considerable reduction in depression. These changes were maintained over a one-year follow-up period. In the discussion, special attention is paid to the comparison of this self-control model with the well-known cognitive behavioral model and to the cue-conditioning model in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. |
