AbstractThree groups of fin-clipped, hatchery-reared salmon, Salmo salar, stocked at Long Pond, Hancock County, Maine, between 1952 and 1954 yielded an estimated 4.0 percent return to anglers during the 4 years (1955-1958) following the final stocking. The individual groups of approximately 3,000 fall-stocked salmon (age-group I+) were recovered at rates of 5.0, 0.76, and 6.1 percent. Hatchery-reared salmon comprised over 90 percent of the total salmon catch during the census period. Creel-census methods are described. Open-water fishermen caught hatchery-reared salmon at a rate of 0.060 fish per line hour from 1955 to 1957 inclusive. Ice fishermen took 0.0047 salmon per line hour during the same years. From 1954 to 1958 ice fishermen expended 58.0 percent of the total fishing effort and took 14.8 percent of the salmon catch. Survival, growth, and exploitation rates of the different groups of salmon are compared and discussed. Forty-six of the 9,271 salmon stocked moved down the outlet of Long Pond in the 6-year period following the first stocking. Only one of these salmon continued on to sea. Management implications arising from the study are discussed. |
