A self-acting thrust bearing operating on centrifugal force effects is analyzed for both incompressible and compressible lubricants. A design which optimizes the centrifugal force effect is established and found to be much simpler than the designs of conventional self-acting thrust bearings. The load capacity is determined and found to be significant but small compared to that of conventional bearings. Contributed by the ASLE Technical Committee on Bearings and Bearing Lubrication and presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Lubrication Engineers held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 1961.
