ABSTRACTA cross-sectional study of respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function was conducted among farm residents in an eight-county region of northeastern Colorado. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, identify potential risk factor associations, and assess pulmonary function. Data were collected by means of a personal interview, an industrial hygiene walk-through evaluation, and pulmonary function testing. Participation in the interview included 144 farms; of these, 43 farmers agreed to the walk-through evaluation at which time spirometric testing was performed. The calculated prevalence rate of reduced pulmonary function in comparison to population norms based on age, gender and height for those farm residents who partici-pated in the walk-through evaluation was 12.7 per 100. Significant associations between specific job tasks, smoking, age, and duration of involvement in agriculture were found through logistic regression analyses.
