Although there is a growing demand for health professionals to work with geriatric populations, many students in these professions express a disinterest in working with the elderly. This paper presents a review of the literature on factors related to selection of geriatrics as a primary practice area in an attempt to identify specific demographic, attitudinal, or experiential factors that may influence a student's intention to work with the eldelry. From the available literature in this area no one variable or set of variables can be identified as predictive of a student's intent to specialize in geriatrics. Recommendations for further research in this area are presented.
