Attempts to document and to understand the dynamics of elder abuse only have been made during the late 1970s and into the 1980s. To take the necessary steps to combat elder abuse, practitioners need to be aware of the family dynamics that may lead to this form of family violence. This article discusses issues related to working with older adults and their families in protective service situations involving abuse and neglect. It provides a model for practitioners to use when assessing and intervening, in such family systems. Case illustrations that examine caregiving roles and responsibilities and the extent of burden experienced by the family are provided.
