The study provided descriptive data about the quantity and quality of interaction within three different group formats. The group formats included a parallel task group, a process-oriented verbal group, and a process-oriented activity group. Structured group observations were conducted using the Bales Interaction Process Analysis method and sociogrammatic representation. The study was conducted on a 16 bed, acute care pscyhiatric treatment setting. The results substantiate the hypothesis that there is a significant difference in the quantity and quality of verbal communication between the three groups.
