The increased numbers of chronic schizophrenics living in urban centers has necessitated finding creative and low cost solutions to providing successful treatment. A clinic was established at San Jose State University with the dual purpose of providing training for occupational therapy students and treatment in daily life management for chronic schizophrenics. The university based occupational therapy clinic uses a model of goal directed activities to improve quality of life for the chronic schizophrenic. The occupational therapy students functions as case manager and primary therapist in this program. Improvements in self-care, interpersonal skills, leisure skills and pre-vocational abilities of clients were documented. A case study illustrates the program's effectiveness with one client having a history of non-compliance in other rehabilitation programs.
