This exploratory study sought to answer the following general research question: What demographic, organizational, and other situational factors combine best with staff OTRs' and department directors' ratings of hospital-based occupational therapy directors' managerial leadership styles in predicting staff OTR job satisfaction? Mailed questionnaires were completed by 93 occupational therapy directors and 348 non-managerial OTRs who were employed in hospitals throughout the continental United States. When the various situational and leadership factors were combined in predicting staff OTR job satisfaction, the best predictive model accounted for 56% of the variance in staff satisfaction. In this sample, staff OTRs who gave their primary clinical expertise as mental health practice reported the lowest levels of job satisfaction. Some suggestions for further research and management practices that could increase staff job satisfaction were derived from the study. |
