dc.description SummaryThe Annual Review of a statement of special educational needs was established by the 1981 Education Act, to be carried out every 12 months as part of a process of continuous assessment. Their content, according to HMSO Circular 1/83, should normally be based on reports prepared by the school the child attends including where appropriate the views of teachers and other professionals who work with the child. para 55.More recently the Audit Commission (1992) has called for a refocusing of the procedure, clearer objectives, and attendance by LEA professionals. Presently there are wide variations of attendance of Annual Reviews amongst educational psychology services; Richmond (approx. 90 per cent), Surrey (approx. 60 per cent). Lewisham Educational Psychology Service attempts to attend the majority of Annual Reviews within borough, particularly if the pupil's needs appear to have changed. Time required to attend the Annual Review is taken from the school's allotted direct time.This article describes a feasibility study which looked at the proposal that educational psychologists should attend all annual reviews of pupils with statements of special educational needs every two years. This was in line with the Audit Commission's recommendations which Lewisham has taken on board as part of their Policy of Special Educational Needs.This research was conducted as the project element of the AISc in Educational Psychology at University College London.
