AbstractThis paper examines the all-or-nothing conflict, both false positions, in which supervisors feel they are caught. In supervisors' groups, there is widespread difficulty in exposing the details of supervision - as if supervisors fear they may be dressed in the Emperor's new clothes. Agency and external constraints on the supervisor are described and discussed, as is the question of whether supervision can be accepted as a necessity and not viewed as a luxury.
