Economists have played a lesser part in defence decision and policy making than the problems of defence warrant. This paper seeks to identify the main defence economic issues and differing approaches to them by the superpowers, medium sized powers and less industrialised states. Problems of defence decision‐making are considered, and the issues that require research, such as defence procurement and, notably, competition, collaboration, the industrial base, defence output, exports, imports, and over‐runs and logistics leading to the conclusion that more professional work is required. Future economic problems in defence including rising costs and recruitment issues are envisaged. A concluding section suggests a number of practical ways in which economics and economists could make greater contribution to the resolution of defence problems. |
