dc.description Input‐output planning models are used to analyze the employment consequences of Indonesian defence spending between 1978 and 1980. Defence spending created considerable employment, primarily for uniformed military personnel. Routine defence spending demanded more labor than an equivalent amount of military capital spending. Defence spending was more labor intensive than civilian public spending. Conversion from military to civilian spending would have increased Indonesian unemployment in the short term.
