Библиографическая ссылка I am referring to a book edited by Kurt Baier and Nicholas Rescher published by the free press, New York, 1969. The cooperation was made possible by a grant to the University of Pittsburgh from the Carnegie Corporation and the IBM Corporation. It was conducted by scholars from many institutions during 1965–66, but its center was the Department of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, and it was directed collaboratively by Kurt Baier and Nicholas Rescher.
Библиографическая ссылка Other philosophers presuppose in their contributions the concept of value developed in this monograph. See, for example, Jerome Schneewind's fascinating study of Victorian values, and David Braybrooke's relevant and provocative ideas on contemporary industrial societies.
Библиографическая ссылка Values and the Future, p. 57.
Библиографическая ссылка A similar argument can be used to show that the good is not simply the negation of the bad. This can be added to the very different arguments presented in a paper by
Библиографическая ссылка Chisholm, R. M. and Sosa, E. 1966. “On the Logic of Intrinsically Better,”. American Philosophical Quarterly, 3
Библиографическая ссылка It would be tedious to expand Rescher's set of categories so that it applies to disvalues as well as values; not because it would be difficult or complicated, but because it would be so easy and mechanical: a matter of rewriting the present set, changing a word here and a phrase there. So I will let the interested reader convince himself of this by perusing Rescher's work.
Библиографическая ссылка Notice that, necessarily, S is indifferent towards something only if he is neutral towards it, but not vice versa. For another way of unifying the cluster of psychological concepts, compare
Библиографическая ссылка Chisholm, R. M. 1964. “The Descriptive Element in the Concept of Action,”. The Journal of Philosophy, LXI: 621–22.
Библиографическая ссылка A third way is suggested by the definitions in the paper cited in footnote 3 above.
