The mainstreaming descriptor was used to select Educational Resources Informa- tion Center (ERIC) abstracts of journal articles from 1982 through 1993. This descriptor includes articles on the Regular Education Initiative and inclusion. The 995 abstracts were reviewed according to content categories so that contrasts among categories and trends across the years could be described. There were 375 opinion articles and 620 research articles during this period. Marked increases in the number of opinion articles occurred from 1986 through 1989, shortly after influential writings hit the field. Such articles were more concerned with general rationale than specific strategies. The research articles were dominated by surveys of teachers and measurement of student behavior (as opposed to academics).
