dc.description This article gives an overview of the latest developments in the field of film classification in South Africa. When a Bill of Rights became operative as part of the Constitution in 1994, it was realized by government that it would have to review its existing Publications Act urgently. A Task Group was appointed and a new Bill was drafted. The Bill, which had become law in November 19%, sets up a Board and a Review Board. All films and videos screened in public must be certified by the Board. The article summarizes guidelines which were laid down by the previous Publications Appeal Board in regard to violence on the screen and children.
