ABSTRACTA survey of schools for children with severe learning difficulties in Northern Ireland was undertaken to find out if transfer of responsibility of the schools from Health and Social Services Boards to Education and Library Boards in 1987 had effected changes in resources. It was found that major improvements had taken place over a relatively short period of time. Staffing, transport and accommodation are among the resources which benefited. Some criticism about the adequacy of staffing levels of classroom assistants and the therapy professions was expressed by headteachers, but the general picture is one of significantly better resourcing, showing that earlier initial fears by some about the effects of changes in legislation in this context were unfounded.
