SummaryThe role of the mother in the classroom is usually seen as that of an ancillary who provides much needed assistance with non‐teaching duties. In the Mother Helper Scheme investigated here, ancillary assistance is a secondary aspect of the mothers’ involvement with their children's educational experience. The mothers themselves report on their own reactions and on the effects on their children. The teachers report on their reactions and the social, psychological and educational effects on the life of the school as a whole. The report demonstrates that active cooperation between teacher and parent depends on the mutual understanding afforded by shared experience and that the creation of a participatory relationship between mother, child and teacher gives the child the security and confidence to respond fully to his educational opportunities. |
