AbstractMajor proverb collections reveal a severe negation of the value of women in society. Almost every proverb that touches on women shows that the proverb makers of past centuries were misogynists who discredited women with antifeminist slurs. These proverbs refer to the general consensus of men who express their own stereotypical views of women. However, the changes of attitudes in some women about their cultural status indicate that a number of proverbs and other expressions no longer reflect certain women's realities today. This has resulted in women coining new proverbial expressions that fit certain aspects of their modern lives more precisely. These new proverbs represent a critical reaction to the worldwide view expressed in the old proverbs.
