The aim of this article is to present a summary of archaeological research on Sami past, and to give an outline of important tasks for future research. Current research is characterized by a paucity of data and discrepant hypotheses. Solving these problems above all presupposes an increased understanding of what are in fact prehistoric Sami monuments.
