AbstractOwing to want of space, the following survey is not exhaustive and must be supplemented, particularly for Flemish and Walloon dialectology, by the one written by A. van Loey for the new Dutch linguistic periodical Lingua. In spite of the war linguistic activity has been fairly considerable, especially in the field of Flemish and Walloon dialectical research. In the series of linguistic maps Reeks Nederlands(ch)e Dialect-atlassen edited by E. Blancquaert, two volumes have been published: Dialect-atlas van de Zeeuwsche eilanden by E. Blancquaert and P. J. Meertens and Dialect-atlas van Vlaamsch-Brabant by H. Vangassen (both Antwerp 1940) (the Dialect-atlas van West-Vlaanderen en Fransch-Vlaan-deren by W. Pee (in collaboration with E. Blancquaert) was issued in 1946). The problem of dialect-mixture resulting from the transfer of populations, — a problem which German linguists of the future Reich will have to face on a large scale, — attracted the attention of R. Duponselle in IJzerfront en dialect. Een studie over de invloeden van oorlogs- en naoorlogsomstandigheden (1914 vv.) op de dialecten van het gewezen IJzerfront etc., Tongeren 1943. The origin of the Flemish-Walloon linguistic frontier received special attention in H. Draye's De studie van de Vlaamsch-Waalsche taalgrenslijn in België, Leuven-Brussels 1942, whereas J. Warland devoted his Glossar und Grammatik der germanischen Lehn-wörterin der wallonischen Mundart Malmédys, Liége-Paris 1940 (cf. Album Ver-deyen387—398) to the problem of bilingualism. The distinguished Walloon dialectologistJ. Haust who recently died (November 1946), published his Enquête dialectale sur la toponymie wallonne, Liége 1940—41, and L. Remade his Variationsde l'h secondaire en Ardenne liégeoise, Liége 1944 (cf. HKCTD 1945, 107—112). Studies of great value are contained in Handelingen van de Knkl.
