AbstractStandard descriptions of Modern Dutch (e.g. Eijkman, 1 L. P. H. Eijkman, Phonetiek van het Nederlands (Haarlem, 21955). van den Berg 2 B. van den Berg, Foniek van het Nederlands (Den Haag, 31964).) treat assimilation as a purely phonetic phenomenon: the cases are stated either in so-called “acoustic”, 3 i.e. pertaining to the voice — voiceless opposition. or in articulatory terms; 4 cp. van den Berg 1964, p. 60. the discussion tends to center around two main topics: one, what explanation (in the above framework) can be offered for this phenomenon, and two, what is the “best” (i.e. most correct) way of practicing assimilation in Standard Educated Dutch (Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands, abbreviation ABN in the following). |
