SummaryThe pulpit of Fröjel church (Gotland), dated about 1600, was originally decorated by paintings representing the evangelists. During the recent restoration of the church they were discovered beneath several layers of oilpaint, among those another series of evangelists of a rather common late 17:th century type. The old ones were designed in a most curiously anachronistic style, more akin to Caro‐lingian manuscript miniatures than typical of the style around 1600! Technically too well done to be called rustical they are an enigmatic and unique phenomenon in the history of art.
