AbstractTraditional central place theory postulates that if a center has a hinterland population of a specified size, then it can support a good and a service provision concomitant with a prescribed fixed threshold. The order of the center is determined by the highest threshold good or service offered. Some central places, however, support activities larger than theory would suggest; hence, the fixed threshold concept must be modified. Discrepancies between theory and reality exist, primarily, because geographical landscapes are the product of historical and cultural processes and not theoretical geometries. This paper investigates the premise that Saskatoon has the potential to support a National Hockey League franchise despite the fact that theory suggests the city has a fixed threshold population that is too small. It is argued that, despite a small metropolitan population, fan interest levels are extremely high; a tradition of long‐distance travel to Saskatoon by a large, affluent hinterland population is strong; and the competition from alternate entertainment options is minimal.
