dc.description Because of the inclusion of special needs students in regular classrooms, more teachers are using the reading and writing workshop approach to meet the diverse abilities of their students. Mini‐lessons are an important component of reading and writing workshops. This article discusses the benefits of using picture books for mini‐lessons, the selection of appropriate picture books for middle school children, and suggestions for using picture books with middle school children. A bibliography of books appropriate for different lessons is also provided.
