This paper investigates the relationship between the dissemination of information and the distribution of knowledge by studying book reviews appearing in five religious periodicals for the entire volume corresponding to or closely approximating the calendar year 1986. Both scholarly and popular titles are considered. Assuming that book reviews are a useful collection development tool, of particular concern is the lag-time between the year in which a book is published and the appearance of a review of it. Also studied is the extent to which the various journals are reviewing the same books. Conclusions, recommendations, and suggested areas of further study complete the paper. |
