This chapter proposes that in order to professionalize child and youth care, we must begin with criteria accepted for professional recognition and develop into a unique profession based upon our own well-founded criteria. This chapter presents a brief historical perspective of professions, an assessment of the current situation, and a delineation of tasks essential to professionalize child and youth care.
